Tired of basic, boring lampshades? Want to spruce up your lighting without a lot of fuss? In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make a beautiful pleated lampshade without sewing a single stitch.
A ruffled lampshade adds instant texture, depth and visual interest to any room. However, many ready-made styles can be expensive and making your own from scratch requires advanced sewing skills. This no-sew method allows you to create a custom pleated shade in just a few easy steps.
Materials
All you need is:
- lampshade
- tape (or fabric)
- hot glue gun
- scissors
By carefully folding and gluing the material around the cardboard forms, you can achieve a gathered, layered look without threading a needle.
Let’s get started with our no-sew pleated lampshade! I used an old lampshade I found at a thrift store for a couple of bucks. Reusing items is an easy way to be kind to the environment while saving money.
- The first step is to gather your supplies. In addition to the lampshade, you will need scissors, hot glue and tape. Turn on some of your favorite podcasts or TV shows too – you’ll want some entertainment while you work.
2. Take your ribbon and cut a piece to the same approximate height as your lampshade. Then fold it in half lengthwise and crease it with your fingernail. This will create a neat, sharp fold line for gluing.
3. Apply a thin line of hot glue along the top inside edge of your lampshade. Then press the folded edge of the tape down firmly. Add a little glue inside the crease to hold it in place while it dries.
4. Continue working, gluing strips of tape side by side. I folded the edges very slightly for a neater finish. Take your time and don’t worry about perfection. Imperfections will contribute to a relaxed aesthetic.
5. When you’re done, fold another long strip of ribbon in half and glue it along the top and bottom outer edges for a sleek look. You can add a few more layers to the lampshade to add an even more custom touch. Feel free to decorate the outside further if you’re inspired!
You’ll have a unique pleated lamp accent in no time. Just add your favorite bulb, I always recommend warm white bulbs and you’re done! Let me know if you have any more questions.
