At CES 2024, SmartThings is unveiling its long-awaited Map View feature, designed to simplify home management by integrating real floor plans into its interface. This first-of-its-kind innovation elevates smart home control by visually representing devices within the home layout – leading to easier and more convenient smart home management.
Today, the average US home has 16 connected devices and that number is growing rapidly. As the number of connected devices people have in their homes increases, so does the effort to manage them.
Map View simplifies the management of devices throughout the smart home. It allows users to see their entire home and all the devices in it at a glance, where they are in the real world, whether through a mobile or home device.
Users can choose to have the Map View feature activated on their televisions or mobile devices, providing instant access to important information about the home’s status. This includes real-time monitoring of cameras, temperature, remaining wash time and other essential data. It also provides energy usage data so that users can manage energy usage from a bird’s eye view.
Previously, device management required navigation and scrolling to find individual devices. Now users can easily generate a 3D map populated by all their devices, reflecting their actual position in the home. Users can also customize by adding furniture, allowing easy monitoring and control of devices directly from the map interface.
Another exciting feature is the new AI characters that users can create in Map View. These characters can mimic family members and even pets around the house, and provide an intuitive and fun way to keep track of your smart life. For example, if your home is too warm, then your AI characters will appear to be sweating. Not only has Map View made managing your smart home easier, but also more enjoyable!
Anyone can easily create a 3D layout of their home in Map View using AI technology. For homes with online floor plans, users can enter their address to automatically create their layout. If they only have a physical copy or image of the floor plan, they can simply take a photo of it and SmartThings will automatically convert it into a 3D layout. Users can even sketch their floor plan in the app to generate the layout.
Samsung’s LiDAR-enabled devices, including the Jet Bot vacuum cleaner or the Ballie AI robot demonstrated at CES 2024, can be used to scan a home, automatically generating a floor plan, and in Ballie’s case, even placing the device in the right position. A map view, created via a mobile phone or tablet, can be used to check or control the status of each space and smart devices with a synchronized map view on mobile phones, tablets, TVs and fridges – enabling easier and more convenient connectivity throughout your space and giving users the same map browsing experience on all devices.
In 2024, Samsung’s focus on SmartThings emphasizes a more immersive user-centric experience with easier, more intuitive features. With SmartThings Hub’s seamless integration into TVs and soundbars, it’s even easier for users to start and grow their smart home journey, eliminating the need for a separate smart home hub. Map View makes the smart home even more pleasant and familiar, and is a great tool for both beginners and advanced users to manage their smart homes. We’re excited to see how users incorporate this feature to create easier, more connected life experiences.
