Winter beauty at Wildflower Center

January 30, 2024

It’s berry season in Austin. The crimson berries of this deciduous native holly (Ilex decidua) are ablaze on forest edges and in sunny gardens across the city, including the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

This one especially blew me away last Saturday. I also enjoy the wig-like Texas nolina that descends over the boulder terrace.

Shaped, silver-white trunks of Texas jewel (Diospyros texana) also caught my eye in this quieter season.

These are two great small, native trees to add to your garden for winter interest. Plant now, before the heat returns.
