Two months ago I was in desperate need of a mattress. I had just moved into a new apartment and was only getting by on my mattress topper, which, although fluffy, wasn’t enough to prevent aches and pains all over my body. Couple the hardness of the ground with the January chill that seeped into the floor beneath me, and I felt like I was waking up every morning with a numbness. I knew that no matter how many blankets and yoga mats I put under my sleeping surface, I wouldn’t be able to get a good night’s sleep without proper padding. (Before that I was sleeping on an ultra-firm mattress that also gave me hip pain, so it wasn’t much better.) The only light I could see at the end of the tunnel was a new mattress from The Company Store, which was expected to arrive at the door in a week. When an editor-loved bedding and bath brand offered the opportunity to test it, I naturally jumped at the chance to try out an exciting new offering. Now, more than two months later, I couldn’t be happier with my decision.

Design features that stand out

Company Store’s new mattress is a hybrid mattress. In other words, it is made of multiple layers of fiber and foam designed to provide comfort and reduce pressure at the same time. Namely, two layers of gel foam provide support, while hypoallergenic latex fits the body. The layer of cotton between the two layers of coils additionally makes the sleeping surface stable and a layer of steel coils adds just enough strength to help you achieve deep sleep. Finally, the mattress can boast i antimicrobial layer from copper, silver and gel comfortable fibers.

It should also be noted that the mattress is available in six standard sizes, and you can too add a 5-inch or 9-inch foundation to your order. In case you’re not familiar, this is basically a wooden box with slats covered in fabric that prevents your mattress from sagging.

And although you will cover your mattress with a sheet, you cannot ignore it lovely exterior. Hand-woven and featuring the brand’s signature floral motif, this is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful mattresses on the market. A quilted top in wool, silk and cashmere additionally makes this bedroom basic breathable and moisture wickingso you won’t overheat throughout the night.

Before I get into the reasons why I love this mattress — and there are many — I want to make a few disclaimers. This mattress is made to order, which means it can take up to two months to arrive at your home. So don’t do like me and sleep on an uncomfortable surface until you get it. Also, each size is listed as being 15 inches tall on the website, but my full size mattress is 20 inches tall. I don’t know why but suffice it to say I had to replace all but one of my fitted sheets as most of them could no longer accommodate my bed and found new ones that do fit was a challenge. The height also makes the mattress quite a bit heavier than your standard 8-inch or 12-inch mattress, which is something to keep in mind if you move around a lot.

In addition, the mattress has four side handles to help you position it. My roommate and I were able to get it on the floor and then I was able to get it on my actual bed myself when the bed frame arrived. I have a basic steel frame and found that I don’t need a mattress foundation. Also, because the mattress is so heavy, it doesn’t slide around on the frame, which is nice. Now that my bed is all set up, I love the tall height. The mattress is raised high off the cold floor and is so comfortable to climb on. It also just makes my bed look fluffy and solid, not flat and hard.

Of course, the best feature of this mattress is the unsurpassed comfort it provides. Its firmness level is classified as “luxury firm” on the company’s website, The Company Store. I don’t know what that means, but I’d say it’s medium firm. In other words, neither too soft nor too firm, but the sweet spot in between. Research suggests that a medium-firm mattress is ideal for avoiding and controlling back pain, and when we spoke with Dr. He confirmed this to Nnaeme Echebiri, a physiatrist at the Hospital for Special Surgery specializing in spine and musculoskeletal medicine. “I think the biggest thing, as far as the literature is concerned, that correlates with back pain is mattress firmness,” said Dr. Echebiri. “When people switched from softer or firmer mattresses to medium-firm mattresses, the trend was that their back pain improved and they got better quality sleep.”

For the first month, I slept on my mattress without adding a comfortable mattress topper, and it was wonderful. After sleeping on both spring mattresses and unbearably firm foam mattresses, I can honestly say that this is the best mattress I’ve ever slept on. It even rivals hotel beds. The tufted top hugged my body and allowed it to sink in just enough. When I eventually added my mattress topper (mostly just to free up space it was taking up in my closet), the result was amazing.

For an additional $200 you can add white glove shipping to your order. This service includes delivery and unpacking of your mattress. A new mattress will also be installed for you and your old mattress will be removed.

Should you buy a mattress from The Company Store?

If you have the budget for it, yes. Of course, it’s always good to test mattresses in store before you buy, but overall, this is a solid choice that works for all back, stomach, and side sleepers.
