Solving the layout dilemma: Where to put the bed when the windows are off center?

Becca, who runs our Good Influence(r) program, came to me with a dilemma: Her bedroom is very long and large — and, as a result, she’s not sure about the layout. There are two windows, off-center, on one wall and two closets on the other wall. She had originally positioned the bed to look out the windows, but the room was uncomfortable. Becca vented that she felt like there was a lot of “wasted space.” Looking at the pictures, I knew she needed more furniture to fill the space.

Becca’s vibe is fresh and modern, so I immediately thought of the article. Their new collection of bedroom furniture is beautiful and rich. I love the price of these pieces as well as the fast shipping.

When I first walked up the stairs to her bedroom, I immediately knew what she meant. When you first walk in, the first thing you see is the TV and dresser. When you go further into the room, you see a bed and nightstands across two windows. I can see that logic. I’d *also* like to wake up to a view of the outdoors. But I had an idea…

It seemed like it would be easy to move the bed between the windows. This would be the first pleasant sight when you entered the room, and I knew it would change the whole atmosphere. But since the windows are off center, the bed would also be off center, and the bedside table would bump into the closet door… This wouldn’t work. Instead, we centered her bed under ONE window and enclosed that window with dramatic curtains. We let the second window serve as additional natural light, but we did not cover it with curtains. This made the curtained window + bed a serene and sophisticated focal point for Becca’s bedroom. This new upholstered double bed has a lower profile, so the bed fits nicely in front of the window. Once the bed became a place, the rest of the room quickly came together.

Art has partnered with Leesa® mattresses, which our family loves. We have a Leesa mattress in almost every bedroom in our house, including the guest house. I swear anyone who sleeps on it ends up buying one.

Becca’s nightstands are lovely, mid-century modern pieces that I know will look great next to her bed for years and years to come. (Hers are sold out, but I found these beautiful walnut nightstands that are similar.)

To add more storage space, we installed this lightweight white oak double chest of drawers, which has a beautiful, elegant front. I like to mix in wood tones to add an extra level of visual interest. My advice: go for a layered, lived-in look, with wood tones that both complement and contrast. (For more insight into mixing wood tones, read this.) We moved the TV and its mount to the space above this dresser, on the wall opposite the bed. It’s no longer the first thing you see when you walk into a room, but it anchors nicely for movie nights in bed.

We set aside part of the room to serve as a small office – the wall between the wardrobe doors was perfect for that. This decision was inspired by this stunning new oak table. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t like having laptops in the bedroom, but this desk could be used as a vanity — or for romantic journaling 🙂 This geometric wool armchair is chunky, cute, and chunky — and practically doubles as artwork. I also brought this ivory table lamp that has some earthy stains. It feels like a sculpture.

Finally, for the new layout, we create an alternative seating area. This makes the room feel like a suite in a boutique hotel – with a bedroom, office and living room. I got this super comfy, stylish ivory sofa and paired it with a navy leather bench that doubles as a footrest or coffee table. In addition to introducing some rich color, the bench has a traditional vibe that makes this room feel collected and cohesive. I love investing in a bench because this piece will serve them for years to come — it might tour the foot of the bed one day. Or it can serve as a coffee table, an elegant piece in the hallway or even additional seating in the bedroom. A bench is so versatile and always a good idea.

Becca and Connor are really happy with this new look, and so am I. I love thinking about spaces like this, and rearranging furniture is my favorite pastime! It’s not about the size or shape of the room – it’s about how you use it.
