How to transform your home for the warmer months

As soon as the warmer weather hits, I’m ready to shed the layers! Cleaning in every way. I want to put away some heavier household items and brighten up the house. Of course, packing sweaters to put away is a great way to freshen up your closet (scroll to the end to find out my thoughts on that!) But I’ve got some other tricks up my sleeve to keep your home lighter as we transition into spring. It’s time for some seasonal decor swaps!

Replace heavy bedding

If you have a thicker comforter or comforter, it’s a good time of year to replace your lightweight bed covers. Swap out those warm flannel or jersey sheets for cooler poplin, percale or satin sheets. More breathable sheets mean better sleep from spring to summer!

Shop Spring Bedding

Consider rugs as movable decor

Every spring I put away some of my rugs to keep the rooms fresher. It’s fun to see things seasonally – for example, I have a runner in the hallway that I put up around Christmas and it’s joyful. I think runners are something I like to do in the colder months and in the warmer months I want a clean slate.

Reinforce your covers for heavy throws

One thing I do every spring is to put away all my things that have been draped over couches and armchairs. I do love having a basket next to the couch for watching movies though — after all, comfort knows no seasons!

Turn off the kitchen utensils

If you drink seasonal tea or hot cocoa (I drink protein hot chocolate most nights!), you might want to put the kettle on the stove. I consider my copper teapot to be an ornament. Shall I put it away? Probably not, but you could. Maybe bring your ice cream maker back to the kitchen, in case it’s been put in storage.

Make a scent and stem swap

Velvet Blue Bed | Wallpaper | Dinah Pillows | Boucle Throw | Judy Natural/Ivory Rug | Nightstand | Vase | Frame | Bunny Lamp

This is the time when I will put away my winter decor and switch out the spring stems and candles. I have a bin for stems and I have a whole closet for candles (I love them, ok!?) I keep the off-season scents that are more piney or autumnal in there. An easy upgrade that looks and smells so good!

Bring new books for coffee

This is also a fun time for me to switch out my coffee table books. For example, I have a cabin design book and an evergreen tree book with beautiful photos of pines and spruces. It’s been very wintry, so now I’m publishing coffee table books more focused on flowers and lighter home design.

Close your fireplace

We always close the flue on our fireplace and put away the fireplace tools. If you have a gas fireplace, you may want to turn off the pilot light in the summer to save money and protect the longevity of your fireplace. Just open the front of your fireplace, turn the control knob to “off” and turn the gas shut-off valve to “off”.

Update the door mat

I love getting a new rug for the warmer months. Usually after winter ours are used up! In the winter I look for something like coconut because you wipe your feet more. I don’t need something so thick in the summer. You can always place a nice all-weather rug under it.

Tackle the coat closet

We have an overflowing coat closet that we barely used this winter (that’s North Carolina for you!) But now is the time to put away the heavy coats, snow boots, warm hats, all that stuff. Just be sure to label each storage well for next season.

Organize your storage solutions

Notes | Card holder | Bins | Shelves

Speaking of tagging, we like to get just basic notecards for storage. We put a card holder on the side of our buckets so we can easily swap out what’s inside. It helps when I can list everything in a bucket. My mom has a clean one and just writes on a piece of paper and puts it in the bin. Regardless of the method, don’t skip it!

Confession time!

One thing I’ll admit is that I’ve never been the type to put away part of my closet. I’m often cold anyway, so I love having access to sweaters and pants all year round! However, we are getting ready to renovate the closet and bathroom, so I am going through EVERYTHING and packing quite a bit!
