Yellow sulfur butterflies flew among the zaxmenia (Wedelia hispida) flowers last night in this curbside garden in Austin’s Tarrytown neighborhood. Yellow on yellow!
And the bees joined the pollinator party.
Behind all the activities is the architectural whale’s tongue of agave (Agave ovafolia) made a powdery background.
What a beauty of a whale! And wow, doesn’t that zaxmenia bloom early?
Another brimstone
And then there’s this: the stars of the Great Blue Nolines (Nolina nelsonii). How did these bad boys survive our past few winters, which turned mine to mush? I’m jealous.
There’s much to admire in this curbside garden: drought-tolerant architectural plants for year-round interest, pollinator-attracting flowers, movement grasses, and place-setting boulders that aid drainage and bring plants to perfection.
