Do you ever look at the before and after renovation of a room and think, wow i wish i could finish something like that? OK, confession: Me too sometimes! Whether you’re redoing a bedroom or redoing a closet, renovating is daunting—it takes a lot of planning, a lot of patience, a lot of money, and a lot of time. Sometimes these factors can be overwhelming, which will encourage me (and maybe you?) to move on from the project.

One trick to getting anything done is to break it down into smaller, more manageable chunks – the more items you can tick off the list, the more motivated you are to complete it. And another trick is to give yourself a realistic deadline. That’s why the One Room Challenge is such a genius idea: a completely free virtual event gives you eight weeks to complete one room (just one!), and a built-in community helps keep you on track. And great news for my fellow DIYers looking for spring project inspiration: The Spring 2024 One Room Challenge starts tomorrow, April 3rd, and applications are open until April 14th.

The One Room Challenge has been running for over 10 years now, with one spring and one fall session, and has helped hundreds of DIYers call hundreds of projects “done” in that time. Registration is now open on the site — here’s a direct link to the form — and all you need to join is an Instagram account, a TikTok account, or a blog where you can post updates along with other participants. It’s completely free!

From April 3 to May 26, participants will post weekly on their social media platforms about their room makeover progress, tagging @oneroomchallenge and hashtagging #oneroomchallenge to check in. Apartment Therapy is the official media partner for the Spring 2024 One Room Challenge, so if you want to be considered to be featured on the page, be sure to use the hashtag #ORCAT too!

Not quite ready to take the plunge? You can still get plenty of inspiration from past One Room Challenge participants by checking out our One Room Challenge before and after collection. There, you’ll find stunning projects like DIYer Shalonne Luke’s bookish bedroom makeover shown above.

After years of admiring the One Room Challenge makeovers from afar, I decided to jump in this year! I’m torn between redecorating my bland dining room or redecorating my equally bland office; I’ll have to do some thinking before I start. If you have a project you’ve been meaning to finish, join me — see you on Instagram!
