Virgin Mojito Recipe: Cucumber Honey “Nojito”

The warmth of the sun is calling me outside more and more these days and I love it. Soon it will be summer, though, and we’ll be sweating profusely for relief. And when I need a little refreshment, a few drinks hit the spot like “Nojito”. This is a non-alcoholic version of the classic mojito cocktail that is easy to make and absolutely refreshing. And this is my favorite virgin mojito recipe.

From what I’ve read, the origin of the mojito can be traced back to Cuba. It could be as early as the late 1500s, using sugarcane juice (guarapo) as the primary ingredient. Some think that people working in the Cuban sugar cane fields brewed a similar potion to combat disease. Mint has a cooling effect, relieves headaches and colds, and calms stomach problems. I use peppermint several times a week during the summer and it makes everything better.

While we can only speculate as to the origin of the mojito, I will happily claim that this non-alcoholic version is. I made it for the first time last year for dinner and it’s been a favorite ever since. And it goes great with simple grilled chicken.

I’m not a drinker, but I love learning from how mixology uses flavor – mint and lime are two of my favorites. I also love using tonic water in this drink instead of Sprite. Both work great, but the tonic water brings something more interesting with its natural bitterness. I added some honey and cucumber to make it really “summery” and I think you will like this virgin mojito recipe.

Cucumber Honey “Nojito” (Virgin Mojito)

A version of the classic cocktail without alcohol. So simple, so refreshing, yet so delicious. Can be made in bulk in a pitcher for larger groups

  • 4 slices cucumber
  • 4-5 sheets fresh mint plus a little extra for decoration
  • 2 tsp med
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1.5-2 tbsp simple syrup
  • 10-12 or tonic water

Alternative

  • sprite this can be used in place of simple syrup and tonic water if desired.
  • Add cucumber, mint and honey to a tall glass. Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, gently mix (press and mix) the mixture, being careful not to break the mint into too small pieces.

  • Add ice, simple syrup and tonic water and stir with a long spoon. Enjoy!
