Valentine’s Day isn’t really a holiday that we… decorate for. I mean, I know people know! But the last time I remember decorating for Valentine’s Day was my teacher putting up window handles in elementary school—not quite the vibe for our house. However, I’ve found simple, subtle ways to romanticize our home for the February holiday (see all our favorite ways to romanticize life at home here). Indulge in one or two of these sweet touches and get in the mood for love.
Enjoy sweets as decoration
Glass Candy Jars | Picture of a framed heart | Kitchen sources
Get a pretty glass jar (these are only $8!) of candy for Valentine’s Day. This is my favorite type of functional decor because it’s edible! I’m putting Conversation Hearts and Sour Lips in our jars, but I can already predict we’ll be filling them with Hot Tamales or Swedish Fish. I put these jars on our kitchen shelves and enjoy the pop of color — and a handful of candy every time I pass by.
Frame it in a heart
Keeping a sweet keepsake in a heart frame makes for instant Valentine’s Day decor – but I’m here to tell you that you can keep this cutie hanging or on a table year-round (I personally have three of these hanging in my house).
Tie a ribbon on it
Here’s another hot tip for you: Grab some Valentine’s ribbon — I have black hearts and I love you — and keep them in an easily accessible drawer. When you have a ribbon, almost everything feels like a gift. I tied a ribbon around a small bag of cookies at the girls’ lunch, and I tied another around the Martinelli’s I brought to my sister. No need for a complete package – it’s the sweetest little touch.
Sweeten your home with fragrance
Decorating can be a complete sensory experience! I don’t know about you, but we’re still burning our Christmas candles around here. And so, I start lighting a new candle — the “Love Potion” — and just walk into the room it feels different. This one has sweet/floral/citrus notes and the new fragrance signals a new season and a new celebration. Get a small candle holder for a special touch.
Choose New Art for your Frame TV

Choosing a new picture for our Frame TV could practically be award in our house. Our girls love to change their picture, and as we get closer to February, the pictures just keep getting prettier 🙂 I’m rounding up a few favorites for you here.
Change our bed linen
It doesn’t have to have a heart! I hung red-striped tea towels on the oven door and set the table with maroon linen napkins (leftovers from Christmas, honestly). I also rummaged through the linen closet for pink bed sheets — and pillowcases with romantic flowers.
Refresh your flowers

Get fresh flowers at Trader Joe’s. Roses are a classic, but fresh tulips are really sweet. Psst… I also took some artificial peonies and sprayed them with a little perfume (*wink*).
Keep it pink!
Swap out your tapered candles for a sweet shade for Valentine’s Day. I found an ombre set that goes from peach to pink to lavender, and I keep moving them around the house for a romantic rose-colored glow. Hot Tip: Swapping out your taper candles for a seasonal or festive color is about the easiest and cheapest way to “celebrate” anything.

Set the table for romance
One of my favorite “hacks” is to switch out the salad/appetizer plates for something festive/seasonal: bunnies for Easter, Christmas trees in December… and for Valentine’s Day I look for something red or with a red border or something with a little heart on it. You can keep your everyday table setting and simply replace the salad plate! Everything looks “tidy”.
Bake your heart
Take a heart-shaped cake pan and start baking. Never underestimate the enthusiasm behind freshly baked cookies on the counter after school. Bonus points if the kids freeze them. Save a few on a pretty plate and enjoy even more edible decor.
