Designing a living room: simple tips and tricks

As a professional interior designer with nearly two decades of experience under my belt, I can safely say that I’ve learned a thing or two about creating beautiful living spaces over the years. I have a deep passion for design and often wish I could better share my expertise in a more accessible way (i.e. free! Let me design your party space!) While that’s unfortunately not possible, I like to do what I can. when i can. I’m excited to share some of my top tips for designing a living room that really shines.

Living room design tips

First of all, when I design a living room, I always like to incorporate different layers of lighting. Use a mix of floor and table lamps, along with wall lamps and overhead lighting, all on dimmers to create flexibility and more ambiance options.

Then, don’t underestimate the power of texture – when you’re finalizing your fabrics, try incorporating a combination like velvet, linen and wool. Different materials add depth and visual interest.

Besides…

I almost always add a black element because I find it helps anchor the space. Wall sconce, vase, drapery rod – essential.

Furthermore, layering that base in neutrals is always a safe bet, and then having fun with a variety of patterns through pillows and throws is my go-to move. This way you can switch things up very easily as your taste inevitably ebbs and flows. (This post needs updating, but it’s still my favorite trick for mixing pillows)

Moreover, in addition to various fabrics and textiles, I always like to play with materials. In all my living room designs you will probably find a combination of wood, metal, fabric and stone. I feel these elements add richness and variety to the space.

In the end…

Pay attention to the legs of your furniture. Including a few pieces with visual weight (eg low to the ground) helps tremendously. You want variety and interest in leg heights, shapes and sizes to create a stunning space.

With these tips in mind, you should be able to create a living room that is aesthetically pleasing, functional and attractive. Here’s a little rounding to give you an idea of where we might land with these living room design tips:
