Maybe you already have the kitchen you’ve always dreamed of (congratulations!), or maybe there are a lot of new things you’d like to do one day. Anyway, have you ever wondered if the kitchen elements you want the most are loved by others? And to us. The features that make a kitchen totally on-trend and especially desirable are changing, and a recent landmark study by appliance repair and maintenance company Frontdoor analyzed millions of active home listings on Zillow to determine the top features that make homes sell—especially kitchens. Frontdoor looked at the number of views per day a home received, noting that a high number of views usually means less time on the market. Here are some of the most in-demand kitchen items this year, in every state in the country.
The kitchen features Americans want most
When it comes to kitchens, there are almost unlimited design possibilities. From rustic to minimalist to country chic aesthetics and everything in between, style trends continue to change every year. Of course, one person’s idea of a dream kitchen can be completely unique from another person’s – especially regionally.
Consider the fact that people in Illinois and Oregon are currently falling in love with butcher worktops, or that those in cold, windy Vermont can’t live without their pantries. And people in Kansas consider a double oven a luxury without which their kitchen would not be complete. Even so, some design trends seem to be universally desirable — like the six down.
With continued popularity for decades, granite countertops are a staple in many American kitchens. Granite is durable, easy to clean, and lends an elegant look to almost any kitchen aesthetic. According to Frontdoor, homes with granite countertops enjoyed an average of 160 views per day on Zillow.
This Pennsylvania kitchen features an increasingly common but bold combination of black countertops and white cabinetry. It’s a best-of-both-worlds design that makes it easy to change kitchen decor to suit changing tastes. In contrast, a white granite countertop pairs with white cabinets and wall paint for a crisp, minimalist look in this Michigan kitchen.
Butcher block Countertops
The perfect addition to a chic farmhouse kitchen, butcher block countertops are a popular choice in today’s kitchens. A huge advantage, apart from the natural aesthetics, is the possibility to choose from a wide range of woods and finishes to suit every taste (you can even make them yourself!). But in general, butcher block countertops require a lot of regular maintenance to prevent or repair scratches, dents, and even drying out. Even so, they’re a beautiful kitchen feature that’s unlikely to decline in popularity anytime soon, Frontdoor says in its report. These countertops help the home garner an enviable 160 views per day on Zillow. A medium wood countertop looks right at home in this Dutch kitchen, while the owner of this Illinois home chose blue wood for his butcher block countertop, which pairs well with the white backsplash and chic black floor.
Many people confuse quartz with granite, but quartz is an engineered material that contains crushed stone and a binding material such as resin, while granite is natural stone. Quartz has a naturally matte finish, unlike the sheen you’ll find on granite or marble countertops. Quartz countertops are versatile, easy to care for, and less expensive to purchase and install than granite or marble. According to Frontdoor’s findings, homes on Zillow with quartz countertops averaged 150 views per day. This California kitchen beautifully demonstrates how quartz can work for a casual-chic aesthetic, with the use of a medium-toned wood floor and floral and wood accents.
Often combined with other styles and types of lighting in kitchens, recessed lighting is also high on the list of most desired home features. Homes with kitchens that have recessed lighting have enjoyed about 147 views per day while active on Zillow, and it’s no wonder why: It’s stunning, stylish, easy to maintain, and even makes the space look bigger. You can install as many or as few as you need, you can use it for spotlight or general lighting, and as mentioned before, it is suitable for combining with almost any other lighting. This small and simple kitchen in Venice has three recessed lights with plenty of natural light, while this powder blue Austin kitchen has two rows of recessed lights paired with two bright silver pendant lights for a clean, modern aesthetic that still manages to feel cozy.
If you currently live in a small apartment or have lived in one in the past, you know the inherent value of a pantry. And it’s clear you’re not alone: Frontdoor finds that homes with storage receive an average of 137 views per day on Zillow. A walk-in pantry keeps kitchen clutter to a minimum, serves as a place to store trash cans or other less desirable items, and helps keep frequently used items close at hand without taking up counter space. This pantry has room for everything and boasts some space, while this pantry has rows and rows of white shelves, which homeowners use to store dry goods, snacks, and canned goods. Baskets are a good way to hold small or loose items. With pull-out drawers, a backrest and a wire for storing coffee cups, this pantry is just as enviable.
Another popular lighting style, perhaps because of its flexibility and the way it lends itself to DIY projects (check out this cool project and this one , too), pendant lighting was another one at the top of Frontdoor’s list. Houses with pendant lighting averaged 128 views per day. This kitchen in Buenos Aires proudly displays the popular rattan pendant lights, which lend a natural, rustic vibe to its surroundings. In contrast, sparkling pink orbs in the form of pendant lighting are suspended from the ceiling above the dining table in this beautiful pink, black and white kitchen.
Whether you’re looking to sell your home in the near future, or just want to check out the current kitchen trends, keep in mind that these enduring design elements are just some of the most desirable features today, according to Zillow. Other sought-after kitchen features include double ovens, integrated dishwasher, wine fridge and wine cellar, with 160, 141, 128 and 127 average views per day respectively. But remember: the majority the important thing about your kitchen isn’t its potential resale—it’s how much you love and enjoy it while it’s yours.
