Decorating with mirrors can make any room look bigger and brighter. But finding a huge mirror on a budget no looks like shopping cheap can be a challenge. Luckily, artist Marlene (@marlene.dietrich.art) came up with a clever IKEA hack to make a 7-foot-tall mirror for about $120, plus the cost of a few materials.
IKEA BLODLONN peel and stick mirrors are one of their most basic mirror offerings, costing just $12.99 for a pack of four. They might not be on your radar, even if you’re a regular IKEA shopper – but they have a lot of hidden potential, as seen in this hack.
To make her mirror, Marlene took a bunch of wooden strips and cut them to size – longer for vertical framing and shorter for horizontal framing. After spraying them with gold, she made her own mirror from the bottom, working her way up.
She glued the first horizontal strip of wood to the wall, then added five mirrors above it, leaving gaps between them for framing. She then glued long vertical strips between the mirrors, covering the entire height of the finished mirror.
She continued to stick to row after row of square mirrors, adding shorter horizontal strips above each individual mirror. Finally, she added ribbons to the remaining three outer edges to frame the entire mirror.
Marlene made this mirror for her art studio, but this mirror tool will make a statement in any room, especially a bedroom or entryway. Best of all, you can take this idea and make it even bigger (or smaller) depending on your space. And if gold doesn’t fit your decorating style, spray paint the frame in black, white, or any other color under the sun.
